Role

Leading the design upfront

I joined as a remote Product Designer while they were working on their MVP.

Working for LAYZR was so intimidating for me. For over 4 years, I have been working on startups that are built for fast scaling. I was a bit saturated working on large problems that need to work for everyone. I want to feed my creative mind. So, I was looking for an opportunity where I can challenge my design thinking mindset and build something cool!

Goals

Introducing a natural and immersive experience to strengthen the bond between streamers and viewers.

We didn't have a clear goal when we started. We have just one aim, to design a product by creating an effective and engaging user experience that meets the needs and preferences of the target audience, and ultimately helps to achieve its business goals.

Two round of design

First Validate, Then Grow

I joined the LAYZR team in June 2021, and in a period of 6 months, I led two rounds of redesign.

The first round could be described as a validation stage, identifying major design flaws, developing improvements, and then testing them. The result was LAYZR 1.0, which was released in November 2021.

The second round was described as a growth stage, where we put more focus on the visuals and a few advanced features. This process led to the release of LAYZR 2.0 in April 2022.

Challenges

Building trust and knowledge

The ultimate challenge for us to achieve trust from our users. As the concept of digital assets is quite new, there are so many concerns of ownership and authenticity and purpose of collecting trading cards among the users. Our goal is to build a community with trust by adding value to their life.

Round 1

Internal critic & first round of re-design

When I first joined the team, my first task was to conduct a review of the existing product. I started by playing with the product from the perspective of a new user, and tried to understand what is working, and what is not.

I can't help to say, it was a beautiful mess. I partnered with the co founder team to uncover their insights and translate concepts into features that address customer behaviours and motivations.

I was excited to fix those. It was hard to fix everything at once, so we set our goals and followed an agile methodology to reach it.

Approach

SHIP , LEARN , FIX .

My approach was a bit different from other startup that I have worked on while working on layzr. We used Hypothesis Driven Design to introduce new features to prove and disprove our assumptions.

So, we started our thinking process by reflecting on our own experience of collecting physical assets during our teen age.

During our teen age, most of us used to collect Pokemon cards, Tezos and NFL Cards. So I started to dive into the psychology of collecting trading cards, we started to ask oursevles what made us collecting those trading card. what was the psychology behind it. And we started to validating my assumptions by talking to our users, we used discord channel to talk with people who used to collected physical trading cards.

We have got some fun insights from our minimal research. For some collectors, the cards can evoke feelings of nostalgia and remind them of their childhood. Others may be motivated by the desire for social status or to achieve completion of a set. The limited availability of certain cards can make them more desirable to collectors, and the challenge of obtaining them can be rewarding. Some collectors view collecting Pokémon cards as an investment, with the potential for the cards to increase in value over time. And, for many, the process of collecting and trading Pokémon cards can be a fun and enjoyable hobby in and of itself, providing a source of enjoyment and social interaction.

Approach

Twitch viewers users behaviours was the center of the design thinking

After understanding the psychology of trading cards, we shifted our focus to Twitch streamers and viewers. We conducted qualitative research, using semi-structured interviews as the primary data collection method.

Participants were recruited through Discord and were selected based on their interests. We used Zoom to conduct the interviews remotely, which lasted between 30 to 60 minutes.

During the interviews, our goal was to understand the participants' experiences with Twitch streamers and viewers, their motivations for watching and participating in Twitch streams, and to identify common themes or patterns that emerged from the data.

Connecting the dots

From research findings to design solution

We took a top‐down approach to defining the overall structure of the experience. Sketching and storyboarding, I generated stacks of ideas about the arrangement of UI, functional and data elements, and interactive behaviours. Starting broad, our vision began evolving into something tangible.

Build, Test and Iterate

Designing for what users want to know, do & feel

It took us 3 months to release LAYZR 1.0. We worked on the core features on our first release. Designing a simple, intuitive interface was our main goal. We made sure the design is easy to navigate, with clear labeling and a logical flow. We didn't spend enough time on aesthetics, as we want to build stuff and learn from it rather than spending so much time one aeshtetics. We made sure all features work smoothly and reliably.

We continued continuous iteration until it meets their needs and expectations.

Round 2

Release of LAYZR 2.0

In LAYZR 2.0, I want to give Layzr a crafty look. With first version, the idea of layzr is validated and tested, so I got some freedom while working on the new look of LAYZR. I had a clear notion how the design will look like with the new design. I wanted to keep the interface simple and minimal, yet colorful as well as playful and attractive. Colors quickly inform the user what he/she can interact with and where the important pieces of information can be found.
